The Person, Work and Ministry of the Holy Spirit

Lesson One

I. The Person of the Holy Spirit

A. Holy Spirit endowed with the characteristics of a person

1. Isaiah 11:2 “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”

2. 1 Corinthians 2:11 “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God

B. Holy Spirit acts as a person

1. Genesis 6:3 (losing patience) “My Spirit will not contend with man forever.

2. Nehemiah 9:20 (Spirit instructs) “You have your good Spirit to instruct them.”

3. Isaiah 63:14 (Gives rest) “…they were given rest by the Spirit of the Lord.”

4. Zechariah 4:14 (As giver of victory) “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord Almighty.”

5. John 15:26 (As counselor to the disciples) “…the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”

6. John 14:26 (teacher) “the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

7. Acts 8:29 (Commands) “The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
8. Acts 10:19,20 “…the Spirit said to him (Peter) ‘Simon, three men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.”

9. Acts 16:6-7 (Stopped Paul and Silas) “Paul and his companions…kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.”


10. Ephesians 4:30 (offended by unholy living) “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

11. Hebrews 10:29 (Can be outraged) “How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?”


12. Acts 15:28 (Holy Spirit can be pleased) “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…”

13. John 16: 13,14 (Called by the pronoun ‘He’) “When he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”\

C. The Holy Spirit is God

1. Genesis 1:2 (Holy Spirit active at Creation) “…the Spirit of God (Elohim) was hovering over the waters.”

2. Isaiah 61:1f (Holy Spirit to rest on the Messiah) “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord (Adonai Jahwe) is on me, because the Lord (Jahwe) has anointed me to preach good news to the poor…”


3. Matthew 28:19 (In the name of the Holy Spirit) “Go and make disciples of
all nations …in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

4. 1 Peter 1:10-12 (Spirit of Christ inspired Old Testament prophets) “…the prophets …searched intently …trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing…”

5. 2 Samuel 23:203 (Holy Spirit called God – Jahwe) “The Spirit of the Lord (Jahwe) spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. The God of Israel (Elohim) spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me…”
6. Matthew 12:31-32 (Blasphemy against Holy Spirit is blasphemy against God) “…anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or the age to come.)

7. Psalm 139:7-10 (Holy Spirit present everywhere) “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (only God is omniscient).

8. Hebrews 9:10 (Holy Spirit is eternal) “…through the eternal Spirit…”

9. Psalm 64:30 (Spirit of God creates) “When you send your Spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth.”

10. Job 33:4 (Holy Spirit created Man) “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”
